Some Tips on Grass Cutting

  • You should not cut more than a 3rd of your grass at any time.
  • While cutting up and down your lawn, it is good practice to overlap by a few inches on the cut you have just done.
  • Assuming that your lawnmower has the usual 4 wheels, make sure that when overlapping you don't run the wheels into the same bit too often as it will eventually cause a big grooves sunken into your lawn.
  • If you are trying to achieve stripes as straight as possible you can start by cutting straight down the centre of your grass then start cutting down each side of your centre.
  • Collecting the loose bits of grass cuttings around the outer edges of your lawn can be achieved by passing your mower over the edges a couple of times at the end of the job in hand.
  • If you use a lawnmower with a cylinder for creating stripes try cutting in the opposite direction e.g. across the way every couple of weeks.
  • When cutting wet or overgrown grass, you will achieve a better result if you progress your way along the lawn at a slower walking pace in other words take more time for each and every pass.
  • You may have ended up cutting big bald divots out off your grass before, to avoid this it's just a simple case of raising your lawnmower blades. The bits that you would otherwise have damaged could more easily fall victim to moss and weeds.
  • If you are lawn mowing on gradients or sections of the grass that get starved of light, you should raise your mower blades slightly higher than the more open and level parts of your lawn.
  • If you see a sort of silvering effect or a tattered look to the grass area that you have just cut, it could mean that your lawnmower blades need resharpened.
  • On cylinder type lawnmowers the ones that do the stripes, look out for the cutting blades starting to struggle or look for a poorer quality cut becoming the norm, it could mean that the blades are blunt, grass is too high or too wet. in these cases you should again slow down the speed that you move on each cutting path.
  • Remember to feed your lawn and make sure that it is well drained to reduce the chances of moss and weed growth.
